Excellent article. Thank you for sharing the foundational legacy of Black people. I knew a little about the Pullman Porters but not to this detail. I wonder if you could share about the Yale Black Chef’s Club. That’s what I have heard it referred as. An all black male chef’s club considered to be prestigious at Yale University.

Thank you- my uncles spent 55 years with Southern railroad before Amtrak and helped the entire family as well as paid cash for their houses on Washington DC.’s Gold Coast (16th and Buchanan Streets NW)- right across the street where Mordecai Johnson Howard (University’s first black President) lived with his family.

My own father was a Pullman Porter for 1 summer between his first and second years at Tennessee State University, Memphis. ❤️

Thank you for this article and for sharing the book, which I am looking forward to reading. My grandfather and several other relatives were Pullman Porters and I am grateful for their work and the work of so many to establish the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.
